Good to know

  • Safe harbor: to avoid underpayment penalties, the IRS generally wants you to pay at least 90% of this year’s tax — or 100% of last year’s total tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) — through withholding and estimated payments combined.
  • Missed a quarter? Pay the catch-up amount as soon as you can. Penalties accrue until it’s paid, so sooner beats waiting for the next due date.
  • Federal only. This estimate doesn’t include state income tax — add your state’s estimated payments separately if yours has one.
  • No QBI deduction included. The 20% qualified business income deduction has income phaseouts (and health professionals face extra limits). The 1099 Ledger helps you track whether you qualify.
